A portrait of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos (r. 1261-1282) using acrylic. Michael VIII was the restorer of the Byzantine Empire who organized the recapture of Constantinople in 1261 from the Latin Empire, liberating the city after 57 years of Latin rule. He was also the founder of the last Roman dynasty, the Palaiologos Dynasty which ruled the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) until its fall in 1453.
